Deconstructing Signals into OSINT Identification Parameters and Tactics
1. Capture and Digitization
Before extraction can occur, the analog signal received by the antenna must be converted into digital data using high-speed ADCs (Analog-to-Digital Converters).
I/Q Sampling:
The signal is decomposed into its **In-phase (I)** and Quadrature (Q) components. This process preserves the entire mathematical integrity of the wave, including its phase information.
2. Inter-Pulse Parameter Extraction (Pulse Descriptors)
The first level of identification relies on the timing and structure of the transmitted radar pulses. Algorithms measure these with nanosecond precision:
PRI (Pulse Repetition Interval):
The time between consecutive pulses. This is the primary "fingerprint." While modern radars use *staggered PRI* (variable intervals) to evade jamming, the AI can detect the underlying mathematical pattern of these variations.
PW (Pulse Width):
The duration of each individual pulse. This indicates the radar's current mode: search mode (long pulse) or tracking/acquisition mode (short pulse).
Scan Rate:
The speed at which the antenna sweeps across the sky, detected through the variation in the amplitude of the received signal.
3. Intra-Pulse Analysis (The "Specific" Signature)
This is where we identify the specific hardware signature. Even two radars of the exact same model will have microscopic differences due to electronic component tolerances.
UMoT (Unintentional Modulation on Transmit):
Tiny phase or frequency variations induced by the radar's specific power amplifier. This is the electronic equivalent of "rifling marks on a bullet," allowing us to identify the specific unit.
MOP (Modulation on Pulse):
Detecting internal modulation (Linear Frequency Modulation/Chirp or Barker coding). This reveals the adversary's capability regarding pulse compression and range resolution.
4. Creating the "Pulse Descriptor Word" (PDW)
All the extracted data is packaged into a standardized digital format known as a PDW
A PDW typically contains:
[Frequency, Time of Arrival (TOA), Amplitude, PW, Modulation Type]
These PDWs are streamed to the Command Post's ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) database for real-time comparison.
5. Threat Library Comparison (Emitter Identification)
The algorithm compares the extracted fingerprint against a pre-existing database:
Confirmed Match:
"P-18 (VHF) Radar detected at 120^{\circ} azimuth."
Unknown/New Threat:
If the fingerprint does not exist in the library, the AI tags it as a "New Threat" and begins logging its behavior to build a new profile.
Operational Insight
For an officer at the Command Post, Feature Extraction is the tool that clears the "fog of war." If the algorithm detects a highly specific PRI associated with an S-400 or Patriot battery, you instantly know the exact weapon system you are facing—even if it is not yet optically visible or within traditional engagement range.
